Improper Furnace Installation
This Springfield VA furnace venting was inspected about a week before this photo. My clients asked me back to inspect the "repair." There is so much wrong here it is frightening. The vent comes from the left, horizontal inside that chase for about 15'. It curves downward at the corner and then hooks again to make its run toward the chimney on the right. It is glued everywhere with an improper material and the job is quite ugly.
The venting material is angled downward. Exhaust does not vent downward. For proper venting it needs an upward incline for its entire run. Heat will clog at the joints and heat excessively. When it does this carbon monoxide escapes. And it cannot obtain a good draft to exit the chimney. This is all quite dangerous. It represents not only a carbon monoxide danger, but a fire danger as well. It is totally unprofessional. Look closely. The vent at the top of the water heater is also still disconnected. That exhaust is escaping into the house as well.
